The Conversation Of You on the Web

The Conversation Of You on the Web
By Martin Brossman

From your career to your business, it is wise to think about the current and future conversation about you on the web. When you have a talk with someone at a networking event, that conversation lasts only as long as you’re speaking and in the memory of the people who were listening. Conversations on the web that may passionately express a strong opinion in the moment may live for years, long after the opinion has faded away.

Right now you are probably on the web in some form whether you planned it or not. My invitation is to participate in the conversation that you want about yourself on the web.
Trying to control everything that is said about you on the web is not what I’m talking about (and a poor use of time that would drive you crazy.) Just as speaking without thinking in public can have immediate negative ramifications personally, doing the same thing on the web can have ramifications over a longer period of time. For example, when I first started searching my own name on the web I was shocked to find an upset note complaining about a faulty product associated with my name. When I investigated further, I found out that I had actually posted the note a year ago to the manufacturer, and Google had pulled the note out of context with my name attached. This opened my eyes to the importance of paying attention to what I put on the Internet and the value of spending some time attending to that. I am not talking about falsely representing yourself on the web to look good, but I am talking about insuring that what’s on the Web represents the type of person you are committed to being. So you see, “the conversation of you” on the Web is your permanent virtual showcase, including more than just what you do or your job. It is giving people a sense of the total person, beyond a mere description attached to a job.

Just as in business networking in person, trying to be everywhere all the time does not work well. My advice about business and social networking is to start by picking one to three good networking sources. Work with them and get to know them, — even though every one of your friends may be sending you an invite to other online groups you’ve never heard of . For example, you may want to start with linkedin.com, or a local business group like inside919.com. Allot a set amount of time each week for learning about how to use it, or even go to some training on the topic. From You Tube, to blogs, to the site’s own resources, there are a lot of free educational resources on the web to help you learn to navigate wisely. Watch what others do and notice the effect it has on you, both positive and negative. Remember to use the same social skills you would have in person on the web (sometimes people forget this key point.) Don’t over-dominate one community group with listings of things you are selling. Make sure to lead with value and contribution.

Being part of networking communities on the web is as important to a business owner as it is to someone with a “career job”. The saddest thing I have seen is the hardworking employee doing their best to “take care of their family” by focusing only on doing their job. When someone takes no time to build a conversation about themselves outside the company and is suddenly laid off, it is a lot harder and more costly to market yourself for a job on the web when you are unemployed. It is a good idea to talk to your PR person, marketing person, web developer or career consultant to have these conversations aligned strategically on the web. Even if your name is not unique, you can make it stand out with quality information attached to it. Using a Blog reader or a news aggregator is a great way to keep track of many information sources in one location. Look forward to seeing YOU on the web!

Surviving the Medical System – by Martin Brossman

UPDATED: When my father ( Martin Brossman II ) suffered two heart attacks and repeated hospital visits in the space of two years, I quickly gained a good deal of insight into the nuances of interacting with the medical system. This, combined with years of volunteering at Duke Hospital where I received the Governor’s Volunteer of the Year award, helped me to develop an approach I now call “The Colombo Process.” Colombo, the TV detective played by Peter Falk, was famous for masking his relentless persistence behind a friendly, charming façade. As any Colombo fan will attest, he always got the information he needed.

The core principle of The Colombo Process is the key to dealing with the medical system: Doctors and nurses bear the responsibility to explain things in your language! If you don’t understand the explanations you hear, be sure to clearly express your concerns. Competent professionals explain things patiently and clearly. Medical care providers are no exception. If you feel that you’ve been treated in an impatient or condescending manner, find someone else to work with if at all possible.

I first put the process in action after my father’s first heart attack, in a Washington, D.C. hospital close to the home where I grew up as an only child, where he still lives with my mother, who has also had heart and other related problems. During that hospital stay I recall telling the doctors up front, “I am not very good with medical terms and have a mind like a steel sieve, so I need to make notes while we talk.” I would be sure to follow this line with a warm smile, and soon made this my customary practice. Some other handy Colombo-like phrases I applied in requesting information or assistance were: What does it take to …. ? Would you help me…? Could you help me with this…?

As I’ve observed many times, families often have to hunt down doctors just to find out what’s going on. I’ve often wondered how much more impact doctors could make if they would simply make an extra effort to keep their patients (and patients’ families) in the loop. On one occasion, I put this question to a very successful malpractice attorney, “How would it effect your practice if doctors truly communicated with their patients”. She said that if this were to happen she would be “completely out of business.” I want you to reflect on how profound that statement is, especially if you are a doctor or nurse. This is good advice to give your doctor as well.

When speaking to a care provider, log the time and ask for the spelling of their name, as well as their role in taking care of your family member. You don’t have to accept what you are told without question. I also recommend speaking to your attorney about designating medical power of attorney for your loved ones. If and when they are hospitalized, bring a copy of the paperwork and make sure it goes into their files.

When a doctor orders a test, you have a right to ask how it contributes to your recovery. You may also consider asking how they plan to act on the results of this test. I fended off at several unnecessary test during many of my father’s stays in the hospital. Most recently, a test order was worded in such a way that I almost missed it. The person told me that they planned to do a chemical stress test “to compare it to the MRI.” I let them know I had medical power of attorney, and I asked if the test was directly necessary for my father’s survival. She then admitted that it was part of a statistical trial to compare two types of tests, and that they didn’t need to do it.

I also recommend keeping a log of events from all previous medical records. This includes all known allergies, what occurred and when, and a list of all medications. Hospitals will often interrogate patients with detailed questions when they are too sick to answer reliably. If you keep your own list, it will help to insure that the hospitals continue to act based on accurate information.

What Is Reflexology

What Is ReflexologyReflexology is an ancient holistic healing technique. Practiced thousands of years ago it is now being recognized and respected as an effective gentle healing method.

We use touch to instinctively calm and alleviate hurt. So too reflexology is a series of applying pressure to specific reflexes in the feet and hands that stimulate the nerves that are corresponding to each particular gland, muscle, and organ throughout the entire body. In so doing it creates an instant reaction of “waking up” each system within the body and reminds it to run smoothly.

The feet in particular are very sensitive and respond quickly to all types of direct pressure. Reflexology will bring back the natural balance and harmony that rightly belong to the human body. It produces a deeply relaxed state which is the beginning of making healing possible. It works with the natural energy fields throughout the body opening up congested channels which is the cause of all disease. It is beneficial as well for children and the elderly.

Reflexology will naturally detox the impurities out of the body.

Reflexology has been known to improve;

Allergies Arthritis Back pain

Migraines Digestion Stress

Low energy levels Circulation Anxiety

Asthma Addictions Grief– Depression

Autism

And so much more…

The Golden (Platinum) Rule = The Social Networking Rule

We speak of it and we try to live by it – “treat others as you would like to be treated.”

To me it’s the main rule one needs to follow within Social Networking.

The Golden Rule was a common principle in ancient Greek philosophy.

A few examples:

“Do not to your neighbor what you would take ill from him.” (Pittacus)

“Avoid doing what you would blame others for doing.” (Thales)

“What you wish your neighbors to be to you, such be also to them.” (Sextus the Pythagorean)

“Do not do to others what would anger you if done to you by others.” (Isocrates)

“What thou avoidest suffering thyself seek not to impose on others.” (Epictetus)

A couple snippets from different world views…

Christianity:

Matthew 7:12
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

Luke 6:31
“Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.”

Judaism:

“That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn.”

Buddhism:

“One who, while himself seeking happiness, oppresses with violence other
beings who also desire happiness, will not attain happiness hereafter.”

Confucius:

“Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself.”

Hinduism:

“That man who regards all creatures as his own self, and behaves towards them as towards his own self, laying aside the rod of chastisement and completely subjugating his wrath, succeeds in attaining to happiness.”

Islam:

“Woe to those . . . who, when they have to receive by measure from men, exact full measure, but when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due”

Taoism:

“Regard your neighbor’s gain as your own gain, and your neighbor’s loss as your own loss.”

The “The Platinum Rule” adds a nice addition to the “Golden Rule”…

“The golden rule is a good standard which is further improved by doing unto others, wherever possible, as they want to be done by.”

You’ll see lot’s of “Top 10 Rules of Social Networking” – pick any of the above and I think you’ll have it covered.

Don’t make a “Goal” instead make a “Promise”

This is the time of year that many of us start to think about ‘setting goals’.

I try to pull out my “Goal Plan” (a sheet of paper I wrote them on) to see where I am on their achievement on a regular basis.

I end up ‘hitting’ some and not others.

I started to give this more thought and study this month in anticipation of the New Year (Resolution). I came across a Bill Bateman video on iLG where he was talking about his “10 Step Goal Setting” process. It was all really good information – much that I had already learned, but it was good to revisit. He said ‘one thing’ that completely changed the way I’m looking at my personal and business ‘goal setting’.

He said to replace the word ‘Goal‘ with the word ‘Promise‘ when we go about this task. He offered up a study by Harvard that indicated that people “miss their Goals” 76% of the time – but “achieve their Promises” 98% – and that got me thinking about how my own mind interprets the difference between the two words.

First off, I am rare to make ‘Promises’ – I completely understand on a very “Conscious‘ level what that means and I always remember both Mom and Dad teaching ‘how you never make Promises you can’t keep’. Which explains on my subconscious level how I feel about this same word… It is to be taken very seriously!!!

As to ‘Goals’ – for some reason I seem to have an entirely different internal perspective about that word. I’ve made them most my life and if I did not achieve them I would refine either the goal or the time frame and simply forgive myself – or hit a mulligan (do it over).

This year I intend to do this one simply thing; I intend to create my ‘Promise Plan’ for 2009 and in it I intend to make some real ‘Promises’ on what I ‘will do’ both Personally and Business wise this coming year. So far the list is already much shorter as it forces me to ‘filter’ things better and interestingly it also ended up covering the ‘most’ important things.

Maybe this will help you as well. Best to you and yours in 2009 – I ‘Promise’ :)

Merchant’s Mirror accounting suite and what it can do for you

Merchant’s Mirror is a web-based accounting suite that was developed right here in the Triad. Both the founders of Firelace (myself being one of them) have had experience with other accounting packages in the past with our own small businesses and felt that there just had to be something easier to use.

Let’s be frank. You’re running a small business, and you don’t have time to waste on trying to figure out how to enter in your books when you just want to concentrate on your business. Right? Well, that’s the way we saw it and with a particular vendor dominating 85% of the market, there was plenty of room to provide an alternative.

The biggest reasoning to go with us? Cost. When it’s all said and done, you usually are paying most off-the-shelf vendors about $ 500-$ 1000 a year, not including the amount of time and dollars spent on training and customization. We aim to provide you a better product, with better service for a more affordable price. Don’t believe me? Just take a look at our pricing on our website. On top of that, we provide redundant backbones, we’re PCI compliant, and your financial data is backed up so you don’t have to fear. Never upgrade again and always have the best features at your finger tips as we roll them out.

We also believe strongly in community. So much that we ask our clients that use our product to let us know what would make their lives easier to use our product. We always have features planned out, but if the community asks for something then obviously it’s important. You can’t ask that sort of relationship with the larger vendors. We don’t develop Merchant’s Mirror for our clients, we develop it WITH our clients!

Overall, our goals are to bring a new game to an old profession and we hope that we can convince you of the same.
