There aren’t many things in life which bring about feelings of joy, satisfaction and fulfillment as doing something nice for others. It can be said that giving of ourselves, whether it be donating our time or money, is a selfless act done only for altruistic purposes. If we are being honest, it is very clear that we receive as much benefit when we give to others as the recipients of our goodwill do. When we help others, we truly, by extension, are helping ourselves. The concept that we are all one, brothers and sisters on this life journey, becomes very evident when we shift the focus off ourselves and shine it on those who are in need. We feel a deep connection with those we help; their happiness becomes our happiness, their satisfaction becomes our satisfaction, their hope becomes our hope.
There is no greater way to empower ourselves, than helping someone else to do the same. When we provide service to anyone, whether it is something as simple as opening the door for a stranger, we open the door for good things to enter our lives. Providing service for others does not need to be a complicate thing. We are given many opportunities on a daily basis to give of ourselves. We need not even look further than our own family. Spending time with our children, our parents or our grandparents, where we genuinely show interest and give them our full attention to them is of tremendous benefit. So often, when we are with our family, our minds are distracted by the obligations and problems of our daily lives. It is difficult for us to sit down with our child and simply BE. What an uplifting feeling it is to see the joy on the face of our son or daughter when we let down our guard and just enjoy being with him or her.
We must look around us and pay attention to those opportunities to offer service when they present themselves. An elderly neighbor might need our help shoveling snow. Someone might need our help changing a flat tire. A colleague at work might need our help with a difficult project. On a grander scale, there are many organizations where we can donate our time and money. There are homeless shelters, soup kitchen, and hospitals where we can volunteer. We must become aware of the world around us and see what a world of difference we can make.
