New 984 area code arrives today in central NC
RALEIGH, N.C. – Residents of central North Carolina who use the 919 area code will have to dial 10-digit telephone numbers when placing local calls beginning March 31.
The N.C. Utilities Commission will add the 984 area code to the region that is now only covered by the 919 area code. The commission is making the change because of the explosive growth in the market and the diminishing amount of phone numbers available.
All existing 919 area code numbers will remain the same, but customers requesting new numbers in the region may be assigned the 984 area code beginning as early as April.
Customers will have to dial the 10-digit number that includes either 919 or 984 followed by the seven-digit local phone number when making calls in what is currently the 919 area code.
Long distance calls will still be dialed as they are now, with the number 1 and then the 10-digit phone number. Dialing three-digit numbers, such as 911 and 211, will not be impacted by the 10-digit requirement.
