Kane Realty Corporation purchased the mall in 2001 and the original mall was displaced in 2004 to open up space for the present day North Hills Mall we know and love today.

Yoga: How Does Yoga Work? Part 2

Hatha Yoga works through the mind, body & spirit connection that is established as each of us performs specific yoga postures (poses). A posture is a body position that is executed for– restoring & maintaining well-being & improving the body’s flexibility & vitality.

This is a picture of myself in Eagle Pose.

The posture known as Eagle Pose gives you the following benefits:

**Stronger arms, legs, knees & ankles

**Open shoulder joints, creating space between the shoulder blades

**Open hips & IT (Iliotibial) band

**Increased circulation to all joints

**Improved digestion & elimination

**Improved balance & focus

Each class is made up of a series of postures as well as instruction on breathing. Some people find that the physical practice of yoga becomes a gateway into a spiritual exploration, while others just enjoy a wonderful low-impact workout that makes them feel great.

You can do it!!! Take a class—yogawolga.eventbrite.com

How do you work your network?

This was inspired by a conversation earlier this summer with a group of people talking about job hunting and freelancing.  One of the suggestions I gave was “work your network“, and I got an immediate “That’s just a phrase!  What specifically can *I* do?”  So I started putting some thoughts down, and wanted to share some here.

Have a network

The busiest people I know *tend* to be the most connected, either in their industry at large, or in their local community, or both. They tend to know (and remember) far more people than I think I ever could. But that’s just my perspective – I often get comments from people who say “oh, you must know everyone!”, usually after being in a meeting place and saying hello to more than a few people. I don’t necessarily *feel* like I know a lot of people, but as I’ve reviewed my own network (via linkedin,inside919, etc), I realize I do have many many contacts, but many of the relationships are going stale.

There’s no shortcut to this – going to face to face meetings is still one of the best ways to meet people in your geographic area, and attending industry events is the best way to meet people in your industry.  And this takes time.  There are some people I know *only* through annual conferences, and it took several years of meeting at conferences, but we’re now good friends, and will help each other out at the drop of a hat when possible.  But those relationships took time to build.

“But… I don’t have years to wait!  Is there anything I can do to jumpstart this?”  I get that occasionally from people.  The short answer is ‘no’ – human relationships take time to form, but some can form more quickly than others.  One of the few tricks I know of which can jumpstart business relationships is …

Be a matchmaker

I’ve done this multiple times in the past, and I’ve seen other people do it successfully, so there must be something to it, right? Invite people from your network, who don’t know each other, to get together. It might be for coffee, or lunch, or dinner, or something. Just three of you, or perhaps a third party for a total of four people. Introduce the people to each other, and let them know why you think they should get to know each other. Small business deal reasons might usually be the best, but it might be something just based on a shared hobby/interest.

Recent example

A new friend is involved in commercial real estate and was interested in learning more about coworking.  Hey!  I happen to know someone who runs a coworking space! Ed, meet Robert, etc. In this case, I just put them in touch via email, but arranged for a casual face to face for a week or so later. Will anything come of this specifically for them? I hope so, but if not, they still both know that I’m actively looking out for things to help make their businesses better. Took me about 5 minutes of phone calls and a couple emails, and I’ve actively created a connection.

Committing to doing this once per week – whether only via email or via face to face lunches/coffees/etc – and you will see results. What sort of results? Will it always be direct work for you? Probably not, but you will be top of mind in many more peoples’ brains when something comes up on their end. It might be just a question for you (and a chance to make another connection!) or project work, or something else.

Be genuine

The key to this is to be genuine about it. Being truly interested in the business of others will require you to learn more about them and their business. Once you know more about their current situation, you shouldn’t have to fake it. But… do be aware of your social capital with people. As much as there are valid connections to be made, you will develop a sixth sense for time wasters. I have been guilty of connecting person X, who is a real expert, with person Y, who turned out to be a time waster. It’s not intentional, but I do lose a bit of capital with person X. Do that enough and your reputation *will* suffer, so be careful. Start small, but do start. The benefits of playing matchmaker in your extended network will pay dividends years in to the future.

What do you do?

What are your tips for “working your network?”

Six Ways the (Business) Cards Work for You!

Business networking is a very powerful tool when living in the Triangle. Even within Inside919, it is not what you know or who you know; it is who knows you. That referral or recommendation goes a long way in connecting for opportunity. Satisfied clients do a great job as professional billboards, and conversations to third parties can often draw an e-mail or a phone call.

But the heart of visibility really takes place in events that involve associations, Inside919, and chambers. In fact, regular and continuing attendance at these events will most certainly attract business opportunity; it is only when you attend once a quarter or twice a year that you might attract little in relationship or connection.

Business cards are still a central point of business relationship. Everyone has one and they get handed out at a variety of venues. But what do you do with them when you have them “in hand”?

Here are six tried and true strategies to make the most of those business cards that are sprinkled around your office and home:

Put them all in one place: Take 15 minutes and hunt them all down. You should have a huge pile when you are finished and a few rubber bands.
Categorize them: Do not sort them by name. Sort them by profession. Place bankers in one stack; real estate in another and so on.

Throw some away: You had very different contacts back in 2009. Let go! If you have not communicated with the individual since that one time way back when, deep six the card into the office basket or recycling bin. Also (remember baseball cards), get rid of those doubles and triples. We know you have a few.

Put notes on them: You will have the greatest memory in the world if immediately after a networking event you write the person’s interests on the back. If they are the glossy “both sides full” cards, put the info on a piece of paper or in the note taking app on your phone. Remember names and you will be a HUGE HERO!

Prioritize them: There are connectors and there are (unfortunately) users. Of course there is everything in between. Put them in that kind of order.

Keep them close by: Keep those connector people close by. I keep mine near the computer. Make a call every other day and say hi. Have a great reason to call and tell the person you look forward to that next event.

Think about it. Success is in the cards.

6 Key Areas to “Work” and Engage in Your Business

The basics of how to effectively and efficiently run a business are the same, they haven’t really changed over the years. What has changed is our economy, the environment, more competition and more marketing coming at us from all directions just to name a few.

Sometimes business owners, especially solopreneurs, tend to get bogged down with the daily, mundane administrative tasks that need to be done, but don’t actually bring in the money. Part of sustaining a business is continuous improvement: more clients, more cash and more confidence!

Let me provide you with the 6 key areas of “work” anyone can engage in, in developing business:

1. Purpose and Values

Know your WHY! If you were asked, “Why are you willing to go broke for your business,” what would be your answer? I’ve asked this questions many times to my clients and some of them immediately say that they aren’t willing to go broke for their business. Oftentimes these are the people that have more fear and less confidence in their ability to move forward in a big way.

Know your core values! Your core values are deeply rooted and control your emotional reaction to situations. Have you ever felt stuck, constrained, like nothing was going your way? More than likely, this is the result of your core values being dishonored. Think of a time in your life when you were happy, fulfilled and full of joy? What core values were being honored?

2. Strategies and BHAG

What is your Big Hairy Audacious Goal? Have you thought about it, written it down? If so, will it stretch and challenge you? Is it something that you’ve never achieved before? Do you have a big enough WHY to go after it and does it honor your core values?

What strategies will you put into place in order to work toward achieving your BHAG? Have you thought about those and written them down so that you can measure, reflect and tweak?

3. Success Model

Simply put – know your Who, What, Where, When, Why and How

4. Execute the Plan

Once you’ve decided on your BHAG, strategies and success model, write down the necessary steps you’ll take to reach that goal. This will allow you to SEE what success looks like. It will also free up storage space in your brain so that you will continue to be creative and inspired to think of even more innovative ideas! Be sure to prioritize and sequence your plan – and plan for obstacles, necessary resources and people you might need in order to reach your BHAG.

5. Monitor Performance and Results

What kind of system do you have in place to TRACK your income producing activities? A simple Excel spreadsheet can do the trick! Know what you’re tracking. Set goals and create strategies that give you the ability to track and measure. This practice will allow you to identify strengths, weakness, threats and opportunities so that you can tweak every 30, 60 or 90 days.

6. Continuous Improvement

We are always learning because there is always new information that we can use and apply within our business. Take the time to invest in yourself, in your business and THINK. You deserve it and so do your clients. How can you continue to UPLEVEL your service to others? Follow the 80/20 rule – 80% of our success and/or failure is a result of internal factors while only 20% is a result of external factors.

Keep the Momentum Alive,

Megan

Why Motivation Doesn’t Work

Why Motivation Doesn’t Work

You know that feeling …. You’re at an event – getting “pepped- up” and energized by the motivational speaker …. Feeling as though you are on top of the mountain …. Finally receiving the “key” to success and now …everything in your life is going to change!

But once again, as you experienced in the past …. For a few days… the motivation follows you into your life, yet as each day passes by, less and less of the pep-talk and motivation you heard and felt so strongly has the power or energy to change anything.

If you have experienced this, you are not alone… and it is not your fault you did not see lasting change. Motivation does not work! Sure, motivation can energize you to take a much-needed next step – but it can never be the fuel to lead you to true life change and success.

Consider yourself like a fruit tree. The tree has deep roots, which nurture and provide what is needed for the tree to produce its fruit. If there is a problem with the roots, no matter how you treat the fruit … polish it up, spray it or prune it, you will continue to have bad fruit appear on the tree.

Motivation is like that – it is a polishing up the surface of your life- yet never touching the roots in your life to make real change.

“So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.” ~ Jesus

To see real success and lasting change, you must go to the roots in your life and change the things deep down inside that have kept you from experiencing a life of true abundance and success.

I call this transformation. Transformation is permanent change, it goes beyond trying to polish up rotten fruit or pruning bad fruit and hoping somehow the tree will next time produce different results…

Transformation changes you at the core root of the issues, and once the roots are nurtured and healed, the tree automatically produces good fruit – without the need to “pep” it up with motivation or ego energy.

Transformation produces good fruit- without trying!

Want to experience true change and success in your life? Be willing to go deep down inside and heal and nurture the roots. It is not always easy – but will lead to success without needing motivation.

What is Resveratrol and do Resveratrol Supplements Really Work?

The new resveratrol supplements is causing a lot of buzz in the health and wellness industry. Resveratrol supplements are shown to help slow down the aging process along with a host of other health benefits.

Do Resveratrol Supplements Really Work?

Resveratrol is a class of polyphenolic compounds called stilbenes. The compound is naturally created by vines, Japanese knotweed, pine trees, and other plants to fight against stress, injury and fungal injection. Resveratrol is also found in food sources such as grapes, blueberries, peanuts and cranberries. Red wine contains Resveratrol Supplements and has many health benefits in moderation.

Many years ago scientists dissected the components of red wine to see why it had certain health benefits. Unfortunately the Resveratrol supplements was tossed to the side as a toxicant. Scientist still didnt understand what made French people so healthy. This is when the phrase The French Paradox was coined. The French people smoked, drank wine, ate fatty foods and still had a much lower rate of heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and obesity than the U.S.

In the early 90s scientists discovered that red grape skin contained the Resveratrol supplements and could be the answer to the French Paradox. Resveratrol Supplements have many health benefits and could add additional years to your life. Studies have shown that Resveratrol helps prevent damage to blood vessels, reduces bad cholesterol, slows down aging, reduces inflammation, fights off free radicals and helps cardiovascular health.

When this discovery was made many product manufactures jumped at the opportunity to manufacturer their own Resveratrol Supplements. The problem is not all Resveratrol supplements are created equal. The extraction process must be performed properly to insure the Resveratrol Supplements are pure enough to produce results. Resveratrol is vulnerable to light and oxygen and should be stored away from the sun light in a cool and dry location to protect its potency.

Recently this Anti Aging Miracle known as Resveratrol was featured on Oprah with Dr. OZ, 60 Minutes, MSNBC, Fox News, and CBS. This could very well be the answer to adding longer, healthier years to our lives.
